We incorrectly reported that Ron Hood (R) had lost his bid to replace House Speaker Larry Householder. Hood defeated Dan Dodd with over 52 percent of the vote.

 

---Hannah News Election Update: 6:30 a.m.

 

 

Even though Ohio Sens. DeWine and Voinovich have urged Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry to concede the election, Kerry has refused saying he will not until every Ohio vote is counted.

 

Since the last update, there are two more Republican upsets to report. Rep. Nancy Hollister (R) of the 93rd District, lost her race to Jennifer Garrison by 4 points. Rep. Marilyn Slaby (R), who was appointed to the seat (House 41) when Bryan Williams left the House to chair the Summit County Board of Elections, lost her bid by 268 votes to the other Brian Williams.

 

Rep. Gary Cates (R) won election to Senate District 4, and he will be replaced by Bill Coley (R) in House District 55.

 

Rep. Charlie Wilson (D) was also successful in his Senate bid, winning election to the 30th Senate District seat being vacated by Senate Minority Leader Greg DiDonato (D), who is term-limited. Wilson will be replaced in the 96th House District by Democrat Allan Sayre.

 

The 98th House District seat, vacated by Rep. Tim Grendell who won election to the 18th District Senate seat replacing Sen. Robert Gardner. Grendell’s seat was won handily by Matthew Dolan, another Republican.

 

Rep. Tom Niehaus will also move to the Senate to fill the seat vacated by term-limited Senate President Doug White (Senate 14). Niehaus’ 88th House District seat will be retained by the Republicans with the win by Danny Bubp.

 

First-termer Kathleen Walcher (R) will be returning to the Legislature next session.

 

In the Senate’s most expensive race, Sen. Joy Padgett who was appointed to replace Jim Carnes in the 20th Senate District, defeated Democrat Terry Anderson.

 

Bill Healy, son of former Rep. William Healy, who defeated Rep. Mary Cirelli in the 52nd House District Democratic primary, retained the seat for the Democrats.

 

Sen. David Goodman (R) lost his bid in the Franklin County Commissioner’s race. He will retain his Senate seat (District 3).

 

Former Rep. Amy Salerno (R) was unsuccessful in her quest for the clerk of courts position in Franklin County.

 

 

Hannah News Update 12:21 a.m.

 

Ohio Democrats have picked up three seats in the House of Representatives as Lorraine Fende won the 62nd District seat now held by term-limited Republican Jamie Callender and Timothy Cassell claimed a narrow win in the 63rd District seat  now held by Republican Ron Young.

 

Democratic wins were offset by Rep. Daniel Sferra’s loss to Republican Randy Law in the 64th.

 

Locally, term-limited Sen. Bob Gardner (R) has lost his bid for Lake County Commissioner and Rep. Ron Young lost his race for Lake County treasurer. Former Rep. Ray Sines retained his commission seat in Lake County.

 

Speaker Larry Householder narrowly beat his opponent by a few hundred votes to become Perry County auditor. In the race for Householder’s House seat, Ron Hood (R) has beaten Dan Dodd (D).

 

With only 31 percent of the precincts reporting in Hamilton County, State Treasurer Joe Deters was winning his bid for Hamilton County prosecutor.

 

Issue One, a proposed amendment that would place a definition of marriage into the Ohio Constitution, has passed.
